The Imposter

By Ross Jones

The Imposter brings together a mid-century Kohler wind-up tin bird and a vase of fading peonies, reflecting on imitation, transience, and the human desire to hold onto nature through constructed forms. The tin bird, a 1950s mechanical toy, hops and sings when wound, imitating the life of a real bird. It becomes a playful yet uncanny presence - an object that mimics nature but can never belong to it.

Alongside it, cut peonies slowly decline in a late-winter interior. Once in full bloom, they now sag and curl, their colours deepening as they fade. Where the toy offers repetition and mechanical renewal, the flowers embody fragility and inevitability. Together, they create a quiet contrast between endurance and impermanence.

Outside the window, the garden sits in late winter, stripped back and waiting for spring. Inside, the tin bird continues its endless performance while the flowers move toward disappearance. Placed together, they reflect on cycles of care, consumption, and the shifting nature of beauty - one sustained by winding, the other by time.
